The Science of Sleep

Ok so I admit I am guilty of being a
man of the night, operating off of 4 hours of sleep and lots of starbucks. It wasn’t till recently that I start wondering “why am I not progressing faster?”. I mean I was eating as clean as I could, I was increasing my workload and varying my exercise, I even added in some yoga stretching. In my mind I should have been crushing some benchmarks. Oh but there was one thing I was forgetting, I was not giving my body enough rest time to fully repair myself. I fell into what I call “night life sleep pattern”. Basically butchering my optimum sleep hours in replace of high powered stimulants. Sleep is a VERY critical part of a complete fitness plan. I know, I know it is a hard thing to come by especially if your find of nightly entertainment. But trust me your body and mind will thank you tenfold, more if your under the 5 hour mark as I was. It will take some effort yes, but with proper sleep you will turn your body into the ripped creature you were always meant to be. Till next time, get zzzzzzs.

Complete Fitness

Today I want to talk to you about “Complete fitness”. Often we have seen cases of people who eat good but don’t exercise, or people who exercise but don’t eat good, even people who do both but leave holes in their game. I admit I used to be one of those people who worked out so hard that I thought it was ok to slack on eating habits. Only recently have I even attempted to package everything into a whole unified “Complete fitness” category. So sean what is this completeness of which you speak? I believe that if one wants to experience all that their body has to offer, then we have to go past traditional ” eat good and go to the gym”. I am talking mind body & spirit. Yes we should strive for optimum nutrition amd yes we should go to the gym but that is only the beginning. Just like our body we should work out our mind, giving it daily challenges and training. Perhaps going even further into deep stretching regiments, meditation or self realizing relaxation. All I’m saying is that we should stop thinking of it as goals that we can complete in a month, months or years. Instead we should view our “Complete fitness” as an never ending journey into consistently bettering ourselves, I know I will.

Are Yoli “Blastcaps” a scam ?

YoliLet’s find out!

Question: What is Blast Cap Technology?

Answer:

Well, lets first answer the burning question, “What is a Yoli Blast Cap?”

A yoli blast cap is a patented beverage device that holds powdered juice mixtures in a small cylinder container which delivers preservative/chemical free ingredients to any 18 to 32 oz. bottle of water.

For the first time in beverage history, you can activate your beverage mixture, at the time of use. Why is this even important?

During the early 1900′s, Henry Ford, founder of the Ford Motor Company introduced to the world, the first practical and commercialized consumer device called the automobile.

The Ford Model T was named the world’s most influential car of the twentieth century. In an international poll, Henry Ford said of the vehicle:

“I will build a car for the great multitude. It will be large enough for the family, but small enough for the individual to run and care for. It will be low in price, that no man making a good salary will be unable to own one and enjoy with his family the blessings of hours of pleasure in God’s great open spaces.”

It was this vision that allowed the Model T to become the pioneer for future automobiles.

Now we have the blast cap, in a whole new century with a whole new generation open to a evolving ideas.

Energy Drinks-Are they Bad?

    rockstar

With energy drinks being as popular as they are now days, more and more people are starting to question the ingredients in these liquid pick me ups. Are energy drinks bad? It depends partly on brand and type of energy “is it a petite 8 oz or the new trend of 24 oz behemoths”. It also depends on your need for additional energy. If you are not engaging in any physical activity you might just need a cold glass of water to give that desired “kick”.

Energy drinks can be bad if you start using them as replacement for your sort drinks or water. It is very natural to feel fatigued around 4pm, after a busy day of working or other activities; Making a nice cold energy drink offering a pick me up sound very refreshing.( But is it really?)

Energy drinks contain some ingredients that are NOT recommended for certain individuals sensitive to caffeine or other health conditions.

Here is a list of some of those ingredients:

Caffeine

The most common stimulant, found in coffee, Coke and Mountain Dew. Found in much higher quantities in energy drinks. Most energy drinks contain between 70 and 200 mg. An 8 oz cup of coffee contains 110-150mg for drip, 65-125mg for percolated, and 40-80 mg for instant. Dr. Pepper gives you 41mg, and a can of Coke provides 34mg. A full can of RockStar has 160mg. Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system giving the body a sense of alertness. It can raise heart rate and blood pressure while dehydrating the body. A lot of people experience side effects above 200mg, which include sleeplessness, heart palpitations, headaches, nausea, and most commonly the jitters.

Sugar

Glucose is the body’s preferred fuel. That’s why you get hyper with a lot of sugar. Energy drinks contain a ton of sugar. Therefore, energy. It’s a carbohydrate, and a lot of exercise regiments suggest a good dose of carbs for workouts lasting more than an hour. However, to much sugar intake has been linked to diabetes.

Ginkgo biloba

This ingredient is named after the rare tree it originates from. It is believed to help with memory retention, concentration, circulation, acts as an anti-depressant, and even shows signs of helping people with Alzheimer’s. The German government recognizes it as something that helps with memory loss, concentration, and depression. 60mg is a standard supplementation dose, and you can easily take 240mg. It is advised, however, that most energy drinks do not contain enough ginkgo to be of any benefit. People on anti-depressants shouldn’t take ginkgo and some of the other side effects include blood thinning, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, dizziness, heart palpitations, and restlessness.

Most of the harmful effects only occur when you take these supplements in excess or when a certain brand that you drink has a high levels of these ingredients.

As a fitness trainer I always recommend drinks with low amounts of sugar and low amounts of caffeine, thats why I’m excited to see how Yoli the makers of a new technology in “Blastcaps” will change the way we drink. (No sugar, no preservatives, sounds good)  Read more on Yoli and their “Blastcaps”. You can also get a free sample

Low back Pain?

With the average American sitting down driving 12,000 miles a year and another 4 hours sitting down watching T.V, it no wonder that 7 out of every 10 people will experience lower back pain in their lives.

So I have two exercises that if done every day will strenthen the Glutes and lower back, the lack of which contributes greatly to the cause of lower back stress.

#1Downward facing dog

Downward facing dog

-great yoga position

-feet hips width apart

-hands facing forward right under shoulder

#2Floor bridge

Floor bridge

-lie on you back with hips bent, placing feet close to glutes “booty”

-squeeze glutes and raise hips off the floor, form a straight line from shoulders to knees.
